A Few Thoughts About Valentine’s Day

Oh, ever since I watched Julie and Julia where Julia Child made a beautiful intimate dinner for her husband Paul Child and friends on Valentine’s Day, I absolutely fell in love with the holiday. Before then I used to think that Valentine’s Day is for younger couples and, as I turned 30 or so, my enthusiasm for the holiday faded. And by 40, being married for almost 20 years, between our growing businesses, kids, and aging parents, it became very easy to get buried in responsibilities, hide in our individual shells and just deal. Isn’t this a typical stage most couple go through? At first we fight it, scheduling lunch dates and date nights, but as more responsibility pile up, we cancel dates and never reschedule them, and soon, transform the relationship into loving co-exhistance. It’s a slippery slope.

Watching the movie and, later, reading letters between Julia and her pen pal Avis DeVoto’s, have become reminders that years and circumstances don’t change relationship and that it is up to us to keep our priorities straight. We can never be too busy to celebrate each other!

So for me Valentine’s Day becomes almost like an annual review of my relationship and where it stand and remind us to celebrate love and celebrate us, no matter our age.
