I wish there was some magic potion that could help me stay motivated to successfully finish the projects I work so hard on… especially when I hit a rough patch. I mean there are times when everything goes as planned and I can almost see the finish line, and, of course, there are times when no matter how driven I am or how hard I work, I get set back by some expected but mostly unexpected obstacles and start losing my enthusiasm and energy to move forward. Whether it is a new business venture or a commitment to healthy living or learning a new skill, we all need inspiration to stay motivated from time to time, and, since there is no magic potion that can help, here are the tips I tap into when I need motivation to move forward.
Remind Yourself Why You Do What You Do.
You must love what you do to succeed. Without love and passion you just won’t go far. And if you undertake a project because you are passionate about it and because you had a vision, you should remind yourself of that when things get rough. Think about what will happen if you stop… too much free time? emptiness? another project? (Also see Do What You Love and Live a Fulfilling Life)
Understand the Project You are Undertaking.
Make sure you’ve done the research, explored the pros and cons of the project you are taking on, written a plan, and have an idea about what ups and downs to expect. If you haven’t, do it now because, while you are passionate about the project, being realistic about what to expect can prevent you from getting disappointed and dropping the project altogether. This used to be my weakest point because I would always get so excited about things, take on projects, and drop them as soon as I would hit the first couple stumbles… but life, years, and a few failed projects taught me a good lesson.
Never underestimate the power of positive attitude! Believe in yourself!! Trust yourself that you can do whatever you set your mind to. You’ve encountered a problem? No problem, you are smart enough to figure out how to fix it. Don’t listen to those who say ‘you can’t do it’ because deep inside you know you can. So, avoid or, even better, eliminate all negativity around you. I found that reading or listening to the stories and biographies of inspirational people is very motivating ~ things often weren’t easy for them either and they struggled and, somehow, they found strength to keep going.
Celebrate Accomplishments, Big and Small.
Working for a long period of time without a reward is hard, and You cannot look at the end result as the only reward. Instead, celebrate small stepping stones as well as milestones ~ anything from trip to Sephora to a night out with friends to a party (yeah, why not?!) works.
