I try to update home decor at least once or twice every season. I am a big fan of minimalist design, and sometimes I like it as is. But sometimes I love playing with accessories to completely transform the style of the look. I do this when I dress, and I do this when I decorate my home. I invest in minimal basic furniture that brings a clean and effortless look to my home, and then I add a layer of accessories. This way, refreshing the look and feel of my home doesn’t take much time (sometimes it can be done in less than 15 minutes) and is inexpensive.
1. Change accent colors
One of the great things about my minimalist base furniture is that any color goes with it. So this summer, the accent color was yellow with a splash of teal (splash of teal!!) and as I am transitioning my home into fall, I have started adding orange and more shades of grey (shades of grey!) into the room. Just alternating the color of flowers refreshes the look of the room. In my kitchen I always keep fresh flowers and change them out every week. But in my living room I use artificial flowers which stay for at least half a season. Having a big and beautiful bunch that adds a big splash of color sets the mood for the entire room.
This is the one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it refreshes a room like no other. During this summer I took out my teal boxes to add a fresh and summery feel to the room, but for fall, I moved the boxes to my bedroom and switched them with an orange candle inside a gold candle holder (which I originally had on my coffee table with a teal candle). Because of the layout of my living room I can’t do big furniture rearranging but a lot of people can and so moving around an armchair or the positioning of the couches, rugs, etc, can transform a room. It’s a little more work intensive but still quick enough to do on a lazy weekend morning.
3. Get Lux
As fall rolls in and days get cooler, I want my home to feel warm but also luxurious. Pillows and throws are the easiest way to add luxury and change the look and feel of the room. And throughout the years, I collected quite a few. I often forget that I can shop in my own closet before I head to a store! Every chance I get, I keep my pillows fluffed. I fluff them and chop down the middle with my hand. It’s a great trick I learned from a friend, and I love the look.
Do you sometimes update home decor? What do you do?
