Building My Ideal Closet: 10 Shoe Styles Every Woman Should Own

January 13, 2016

When building my ideal closet, the first section I am excited to take on is my shoe closet. There are ten shoe styles that are must-haves for every modern woman’s closet that complete her most favorite and commonly used type of outfits. If you are a minmalist, these ten pairs are all you would ever need!  Otherwise, once you have these basic style shoes, you can start adding more trendy styles and maybe, one day, build a shoe closet Carrie Bradshaw would be proud of. Oh, that would be the day hehe! And that may take some time too because I believe in investing in shoes, especially in these ten must have styles because they are timeless and look and feel absolutely fabulous for many years. I believe that I not only look and feel better in a great pair of black pumps, but I am also saving money by investing in them because for years to come I won’t need to buy any more black pumps!

Flats ~ there is no doubt that we can run our lives in sexy heels or any other fancy shoe styles, but sometimes we just don’t want too. So instead, we wear flats (the designers’ gift to the modern women!). Now, flats can be just that, flat, but they don’t have to be! Pick a bright color to make a statement! Also, there are lots of great designs that can make an outfit fun and modern and, at the same time, practical. I love these Kate Spade loafers with the bow. I also love these flats by Ivanka Trump and these by Tory Burch.

Sneakers ~ another comfortable shoe to live your life in. We lead active lives and often need the comfort of sneakers to move around, and I don’t mean just around gym. Sneakers found their way to the latest runway shows and are often paired with dresses, coats, and cut-off pants.  I love my Ugg sneakers here and also Vans’ classic sneakers here and Nike’s sneakers here.

Classic black pumps ~ basic black leather pumps add instant sophistication, and are the choice for many business women, especially since they often wear darker shades of suits and dresses. Love these great Stewart Weitzman black pumps here and ‘Carra’ pumps by Ivanka Trump here.

black pumps

Barely there nude pumps ~ are my absolutely favorite of all shoe styles. I cannot stop raving about them for their ability to make my legs look leaner and longer. I wear nude pumps with my dresses, skirts, pants, or jeans. ‘Claudette’ by Jessica Simpson are my nude pumps of choice!

Pencil skirt

Daily summer sandals ~ being a California girl, I can’t not have sandals in my closet. Sandals are great subs for flats on hot summer days. I love that I can dress them up or down. Just have to make sure that pedicure is in tact. (Love these sandals by Tory Burch here and by Kate Spade here and here.)

Summer wedges ~ I am only 5’3″, and wearing wedges adds a lot of inches to my height. They make me feel strong, confident, and, well, tall, and these are all great feelings. I wear wedges with everything from jeans to summer dresses. I love the contrast of that bulky look of wedges with delicate summer fabrics. A few of my favorite wedges are herehere, and here.

Ankle boots ~ in fall and winter fashion, ankle boots are invaluable. Heeled ankle boots work great with business attire, casual jean and sweater look, or a night out in faux leather pants. Love these new Topshop ‘Marbles’ Ankle boots and Jessica Simpson boots here.

Tall Boots ~ this is another must have boot in women’s closet. I love casual classic style, so knee-high boots would probably be my pick if I had to choose one style. But for an edgier look, riding boots are perfect. They are comfortable and chic, and they come in many different designs and styles to fit your fashion style. They can have an equestrian look, urban look, or rugged country look! They are edgy and versatile, and every woman should have a pair! (Love these riding boots by Tory Burch here, now on sale and, of course, my favorite, Stuart Weitzman ‘5050’ boots.)

Weather boots ~ okay, this is all about practicality, and if the weather gets cold where you live, then you’ve got to have snow boots or rain boots. While here in California we don’t get snow and we don’t have much rain either, I find my rain boots very useful on rainy days and in the garden. (Love Hunter boots and that they come in all colors you can think of!)

Strap Sandal Heels (preferably that sparkle) ~ every woman should have a pair to wear on a night out, and like I said, I love sandals for their versatility. I can wear them with a gown or a cocktail dress, or with jeans and t-shirt! Love these Stewart Weitzman heels and these Kate Spade heels!

So here are my top ten must have most versatile shoe styles picks, and I hope you love them. Leave your comments below with your favorite picks!

I love your ideas! I should really follow your advice. I have like 10 pairs of flip flops/sandals only!

Haha Erna! Sometimes I wish for the lifestyle that would not require any shoe style but flip-flops! I am so much less stressed when I’m wearing flip-flops as opposed to when I’m wearing pumps. But then, of course, I recognize that grass always seems greener on the other side. xoxo
